This fresco is in incredibly bad shape, as a result of Cimabue and his workshop using unstable pigments such as white lead. Stylistically, there are many similarities between this fresco and Cimabue’s crucifix, with the most obvious connection being its emotional tone. Christ is in a christus patiens position, with dramatic and anguished angels mourning above and around his figure.
